Who was Pingali Venkayya?
Pingali Venkayya was born on 2 August 1876 in Bhatlapanumru village in Andhra Pradesh. He was a freedom fighter, farmer, educationist, linguist and patriot. He worked closely with Mahatma Gandhi and played an active role in the freedom struggle, influenced by his thoughts. Venkayya received his early education from Challapalli and Machilipatnam. Later he went to Colombo for higher education and passed the Senior Cambridge exam. He also worked in Madras and Bellary as malaria and plague inspectors for some time.
His professional life and multidimensional talent
Venkayya joined the British Indian Army at the age of just 19 and participated in the Second Boer War in South Africa. After returning from the army, he served as a guard in the railway, but later took interest in agriculture and research. He was deeply interested in cotton cultivation and was also known as ‘Patti Venkayya’ due to his research done on ‘Cambodia Cotton’. Venkayya, the knowledgeer of languages, surprised everyone by giving a speech in Japanese in 1913 and that is why he was also given the title of ‘Japan Venkaay’.
Build National Flag: Historical Moments inspired by Gandhi
In March 1921, Mahatma Gandhi emphasized the need for the national flag during the Congress session held in Vijayawada (then Bezwara). In this gathering, Pingali Venkayya met Gandhiji and showed the flag prepared by him. In the initial design, he included two colors, saffron and green, which symbolized the Hindu and Muslim communities. Later, the white strip for peace and the spinning wheel symbol of indigenous and self -sufficiency was added to the center. The design was officially adopted by the Indian National Congress in 1931, which later became the foundation of the flag of independent India.
