The festival began in Brazil in 1999 as Brazilian National Voice Day. This was the result of a mixed initiative of doctors, speech-language pathologists and singing teachers, which was led by Dr. Nedio Stephen. This initiative of Brazil was followed by other countries like Argentina and Portugal and Brazilian National Voice Day became International Voice Day.
