The Union Health Minister said that the purpose of this mission is to provide cheap, accessible and quality care to all SCD patients.

New Delhi: Union Health Minister JP Nadda said that in 17 identified tribal -dominated states including Maharashtra, 6.04 crore people have been examined for sickle cell disease (SCD) till July 28, out of which 2,16,118 people have been confirmed to be diseased. Health Minister Nadda said in response to a question that the National Sickle Cell Anemia Eradication Mission was started on 1 July 2023 from Madhya Pradesh. Prime Minister Narendra Modi started, saying that the eradication of SCD is the priority of the government. Mr. Nadda gave this information in the Lok Sabha on Friday. He said that the purpose of this mission is to provide cheap, accessible and quality care to all SCD patients.

Investigation facility in all hospitals

Nadda said that the aim of the government is to investigate seven crore people in the age group of 0-40 years in the affected districts of tribal areas. Nadda said that under NSCAEM, all health facilities are examined from district hospitals to Ayushman Arogya Temple (AAM) level. He said that till July 28, a total of 6,04,50,683 people have been investigated in 17 identified tribal dominated states including Maharashtra, out of which 2,16,118 people have been confirmed to be diseased.

Genetic counseling ID card distributed

SCD patients are provided services and facilities to improve their life quality through AAM, including follow-up testing of persons suffering from disease at regular intervals, consultation regarding lifestyle management, marriage pre-decisions, nutritional assistance through distribution of folic acid pills, managing the symptoms of crisis, as well as reflective facilities. Mr. Nadda said that till July 28, 2,62,67,997 genetic counseling ID cards have been distributed in the country.

Hydroxyuria available at all health centers

The minister said that people have been easily included in the list of essential medicines in sub-health centers, primary health centers, urban PHCs, community health centers and district hospitals for this people get medicines easily. Financial assistance is provided to sickle cell anemia patients. The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has issued guidelines of cost criteria for establishing outstanding centers on SCD funded by the Ministry of Tribal Affairs in various states. The Ministry also provides technical and financial assistance to states and union territories for investigation of sickle cell anemia and purchase of medicines.

This disease is genetic blood disorder

It is known that Sickle Cell Disease or SCD is a genetic blood disorder that affects red blood cells. In sickle cell disease, red blood cells become hard and sticky and their shape becomes like “sickle” (Hasiya). While normal red blood cells are round and flexible, which can flow easily through blood vessels. These sickle cells may get stuck in blood vessels, which can disrupt blood flow and cause pain, infection and other serious health problems.
