Landslides in Nepal: At least 40 people have been killed and five people are missing till Sunday morning due to landslides and floods due to heavy rains from Saturday night at various places in East Nepal.

The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRMA) said 37 people died at various places in Illam district of Koshi province due to landslides after heavy rains on Saturday night. According to the NDRRMA, eight people in Deumai and Magogmai municipalities out of 37, six in the municipality and Sandakpur rural municipality, six in the municipality, five in the sunrise municipality, three in Mangsebang and one in Fakfokathum village.

Army and police engaged in relief and rescue

The official said that one person died in Panchthar due to landslides and one person was killed when floods in Khotang and Udaipur districts died. Four people have gone missing from Rasuwa district as they were swept away in floods. There is also news of the disappearance of a person buried in a landslide in Panchthar district. Nepal Army, Nepal Police and Armed Police Force personnel are engaged in rescue operations. Security personnel rescued four people, including a pregnant woman from Ilam district through helicopters and admitted them to a hospital in Dharan municipality. Apart from this, three people died due to lightning in Rauthat district on Sunday morning. Similarly, seven people were injured in lightning incidents at different places in Nepal. Police said that three people were injured in Bhojpur district, three in Khotang district and one in Makwanpur district. Monsoon is active in five of Nepal’s seven provinces, including Koshi, Madheshi, Bagmati, Gandaki and Lumbini.

Domestic flights closed in Nepal

On Saturday, Nepali officials banned the entry and exit from Kathmandu due to continuous rains and the possibility of landslides for the next three days. The NDRMA issued a notice saying that vehicles have been banned on entry and exit in Kathmandu Valley from Saturday to Monday. The officials also asked the people not to drive long distance vehicles for the next three days, unless there is an emergency. A red alert has been issued for areas around Bagmati and Eastern Rapti rivers. Officials said that due to the active monsoon, there has been continuous rains in Kathmandu and other parts of the country since Friday night. Meanwhile, domestic flights from Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) have been stopped due to bad weather. Kathmandu -based TIA General Manager Hans Raj Pandey said that domestic flights from Kathmandu, Bharatpur, Janakpur, Bhadrapur, Pokhara and Tumlingatar have been stopped till the next notice.
