5 killed in Dargah wall collapse in Nizamuddin, Delhi

Nizamuddin Accident: Joint Police Commissioner said that people were going to Dargah for Friday prayers. When this incident happened, they were sitting inside the room due to rain.

Nizamuddin Accident: Five people died in an accident in Nizamuddin area of Delhi on Friday evening, while four were seriously injured. The accident occurred due to falling wall of a dargah near Humayun’s tomb. Police said a total of nine injured were sent to AIIMS Trauma Center and one was taken to LNJP Hospital. Joint Police Commissioner Sanjay Kumar Jain told reporters that till now it has been learned that five people were undergoing treatment at AIIMS Trauma Center and others are still undergoing treatment. We have siege the area. He said that people were going to the Dargah for Friday prayers. When this incident happened, they were sitting inside the room due to rain. He said that a total of 10 to 12 victims were rescued from the debris after the call came at 3.55 pm about the incident. After the incident, several rescue agencies including Delhi Fire Service (DFS), Delhi Police, NDRF and Delhi Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) were deployed on the spot.

NDRF landed in rescue

A senior police officer said that the station house officer and local employees reached there within five minutes and started rescue work. After some time, firefighters and CATS ambulances also reached the spot. NDRF also got involved in rescue work. He further said that rescue operations are still going on. A senior DFS official had initially said that the collapse of a part of the tomb was reported, after which five fire engines were immediately sent to the spot. Officials clarified that the incident was not related to the main dome of the 16th century monument, but to a small room within the premises. Vishal Kumar, an eyewitness, told PTI-Bhasha that I work in the Humayun Tomb. When we heard the noise, my supervisor came running. We called people and administration. Gradually we took out the trapped people.

There were about 12 people in the room

About 12 people were present in the room. The Imam was also there and he is also included in the injured. I have taken out at least eight to nine people. An eyewitness woman said that I was standing outside and was about to enter the room that it was just two steps away from her. As soon as the rain started, all the people went inside to take refuge. He told PTI that then the wall fell. I kept screaming and then some people from nearby came and helped us to save all the people trapped inside.

No harm to Humayun’s tomb

The tomb of Humayun, the UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a major tourist attraction of the national capital. Humayun’s tomb has not been harmed. A new structure was being built near Humayun’s tomb, a part of it has collapsed, and some part of it has also fallen on the walls of Humayun’s tomb. Protection architect of the aga Khan Trust for Culture (AKTC), which works for the renovation of Humayun’s mausoleum, said that Humayun’s mausoleum has not been harmed.
