Asian Legends League: The Board of Veteran Cricket in India (BVCI) has officially announced the first Asian Legends League. This league will be held in Chiang Mai, Thailand from 28 January to 4 February. Teams from six countries will participate in it, which include India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, UAE and Hong Kong. The most special thing about this league is that only cricketers above 40 years of age will participate in it.
Shoaib Malik will be the captain of Pakistani team
Making the announcement, BVCI President Praveen Tyagi called it a historic step. He said, “For the first time, the Indian Veterans team will play in an Asian-level league. This is a milestone for us, a dream we have been trying to fulfill for years.” Tyagi told that many former international players are going to participate in this league. He said, “Shoaib Malik will be the captain of the Pakistan team and Abdul Razzaq will also be a part of the team. Each team will have three to four international players and top domestic cricketers.”
Indian team will be announced soon
Tyagi said, India’s team will be announced soon. Former Indian and domestic players like Praveen Kumar, Jatin Saxena, Shadab Jakati and Manoj Prabhakar are expected to be included in it. The selection has been done on the basis of performance in the recently concluded Inter-Zone Veterans Tournament. Tyagi said, “The launch of the Asian Legends League is based on the age-old structure of Veterans Cricket. Veteran Cricket has been running in India for the last 26 years. BVCI was founded in 1998 by Late Chetan Chauhan so that retired players remain connected to the game. Those who have given their lives to cricket, they should get a platform even after retirement.”
All countries welcomed
Tyagi described expansion to Asia level as a natural progress. He said, “Like India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh also have organized veteran circuits. Everyone has welcomed the idea of this league. Explaining the reason behind choosing Thailand as the location, Tyagi said, “Thailand is a central and neutral place, where all the teams can reach easily. “The local organizers are helping us with the ground and accommodation arrangements, which is necessary because our board is not very strong financially.”
You can watch live broadcast here
This league will be broadcast live on YouTube and FanCode. Tyagi expressed confidence that this league will be organized every year. He said, “This is just the beginning. The Asian Legends League will be held every year and in future we will also work towards organizing the Veterans World Cup. When asked about the India-Pakistan match, CEO of the league Tarunesh Parihar said that it is too early to comment on it. He said, “This is a game, it connects people. If we can give a positive message through this league, it will be a big thing in itself.”
