Sawan Shivratri 2025: Shivaratri of the holy month of Sawan is being celebrated today, on 23 July 2025 with reverence and devotion across the country. According to the Hindu calendar, this festival comes on the Chaturdashi date of Sawan Krishna Paksha and is considered to be the day of special worship of Lord Shiva. Shiva devotees observe fast on this day, do night awakening and all the four worship are duly worshiped. However, on this particular day, there are some mistakes that can reduce the effect of Shiva Bhakti and make Bholenath unhappy.
The Chaturdashi date has started from 4:39 am today, which will remain till 2:29 pm. The fast will be passed on July 24 at 5:38 am. On Shivaratri, devotees worship Shivalinga with Jalabhishek, Rudrabhishek and special mantras. But in religious texts, some such works are clearly prohibited, which are forbidden to do in Shiva worship.
Take these precautions in worship
While worshiping on Sawan Shivaratri, wearing black clothes should be avoided. In its place, clothes of white or light colors are considered auspicious for Shiva Bhakti. Offering basil leaf on the Shivling is forbidden, because it is considered dedicated to Lord Vishnu. Similarly, turmeric is also not used in Shiva worship, because it is considered a sign of honey and Shiva is a yogi.
Do not offer these things on Shivling
Avoid offering fragmented belpatra or broken akshat (rice) at the time of worship. Shiva should be offered complete and clean items only. Water or milk should not be offered from the conch, because the conch came out of the sea churning and is attached to the effect of poison. Light a lamp at the end of the puja, but not in an odd number, but even the equal number like 2, 4, 6 lamps are considered auspicious.
Do not do these conduct during worship
The circumambulation of the Shivling should not be completed, only half the circumambulation and return. After worshiping Shivalinga, never go out by showing the back directly. Walk some steps in reverse and then turn out. Also, do not offer the flowers of Kevada and Ketki to Shiva, these flowers are considered taboo in Shiva worship.
