Nepal Election: Nepal’s Prime Minister Sushila Karki said on Wednesday that her interim government is committed to conducting the general elections to be held on March 5 in a free and fair manner. Speaking at an event in Madhyapur Thimi, Bhaktapur, he said that we are ready to talk about the legitimate issues of Gen Z in accordance with the Constitution. The government will create an environment where Nepalese can vote without fear, strengthen democracy, advance prosperity and protect the rights of citizens. His comments came a day after he met with representatives of major political parties for the first time since the formation of the caretaker government last month. The PM discussed preparations for the general elections and security issues with the parties. Prominent leaders of several political parties of the dissolved House of Representatives participated in the meeting held at the Prime Minister’s official residence in Baluwater.
The meeting regarding elections lasted for five hours
73-year-old Karki became the first woman Prime Minister of Nepal last month. The then Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli was removed from office following youth-led ‘Gen Z’ protests over corruption and a ban on social media. Communications and Information Technology Minister Jagdish Kharel said that talks with leaders of political parties on Tuesday have created a favorable environment for the upcoming general elections. During the five-hour meeting, political leaders urged the government to create a conducive environment for the elections. Karki reiterated the government’s stand of holding elections on time. Kharel told reporters late on Tuesday night that it was a very positive discussion with political parties. Most of them were positive towards the elections, which encouraged the government to carry forward the activities.
Elections will be held on March 5
Representatives of all political parties and cabinet members presented themselves with full responsibility to help create the atmosphere for the elections. It was a serious and in-depth discussion on conducting elections, curbing corruption and ensuring security for the upcoming elections. Political parties were informed about the government’s preparations for the elections. He said that the government sought cooperation from all political parties in conducting free and fair elections. Nepal’s apex electoral body has already announced the date of elections for the House of Representatives as March 5, 2026. Those present from the government side included Prime Minister Karki, Finance Minister Rameshwar Khanal, Energy Minister Kulman Ghisingh, Home Minister Om Prakash Aryal, Agriculture Minister Madan Pariyar and Communications and Information Technology Minister Jagdish Kharel, while from Nepali Congress Gagan Kumar Thapa and Prakash Sharan Mahat; Shankar Pokhrel and Pradeep Gyawali from CPN UML; Varsha Man Pun and Pampha Bhusal from CPN (Maoist Centre); Swarnim Wagle and Shobhita Gautam were included from Rashtriya Swatantra Party.
