Cyclone Ditwah: Storm Ditvaah is reaching near the coasts of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and southern Andhra Pradesh. India Meteorological Department (IMD) has said that this storm can make landfall today. Earlier, Ditvah had wreaked havoc on the east coast of Sri Lanka, killing more than 150 people and causing extensive damage. At present, this storm remains a cyclonic storm and there is no sign of it strengthening further.

Alert issued in Tamil Nadu

Red alert has been issued in four districts of Tamil Nadu and orange alert has been issued in five districts. Due to the storm, there is heavy rain in many areas. According to IMD, Ditwah will pass very close to the coast at a distance of 50 kilometers on Sunday morning and 25 kilometers by Sunday evening. According to the latest bulletin of IMD, Cyclone Ditvaha is centered on Vedaranyam coast in Nagapattinam district of Tamil Nadu. Due to its effect, the sea became turbulent in the coastal districts. IMD said it is very likely to move north-northwest and reach southwest Bay of Bengal near north Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and adjoining south Andhra Pradesh coasts by the morning of November 30.

28 disaster response teams deployed

Disaster Management Minister Ramachandran said it was not yet clear whether the cyclone would hit the coast near Chennai or not, but the state government was fully prepared to launch rescue and relief operations on a war footing. The minister said, “Around 28 disaster response teams, including SDRF and NDRF, are on standby. We are planning to airlift 10 more teams from other states. The Air Force and Coast Guard have also been alerted. Besides, monitoring teams will be sent to the districts tomorrow.” About 6,000 relief camps have been set up in Chennai.

54 flights canceled

Chennai Airport Authority said that due to the cyclone, about 54 flights to different districts were canceled. The airport said in a post on ‘X’, “With IMD warning that due to Cyclone Ditvah, there will be heavy to very heavy rainfall today and wind speed will be 10-15 knots, which can go up to 25 knots from north-east direction, Chennai Airport is taking all precautionary measures.” Southern Railway announced changes in train service due to the cyclone. “The wind speed at Pamban Bridge has reduced and is now within the prescribed limits.
