Bhagavad Geeta: More than one lakh devotees recited Bhagavad Gita at the Brigade Parade Ground in Kolkata on Sunday. The entire ground turned into a saffron ocean. Lakhs of devotees, including sadhus and sadhvis, from West Bengal and neighboring states participated in the massive Bhagavad Gita recital held at the prestigious Brigade Parade Ground here on Sunday afternoon. Sadhus wearing saffron clothes read the verses of Gita in unison at the venue. Saffron flags bearing images of Bajrangbali and Lord Ram were fluttering throughout the venue. Organizers said that about one lakh people participated in the mass reading of the first, ninth and eighteenth chapters of the scriptures. The participants also included Debraj Roy, a youth from Memari in Purba Bardhaman, who was wearing a tilak and a saffron turban along with his four friends. The crowd also waved the national tricolor and repeatedly chanted “Hare Krishna Hare Hare, Geeta Path Ghare Ghare”.
Respect for spiritual heritage and faith
When asked about organizing this event keeping in mind the Hindu vote bank before the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections, the organizers told PTI that we are not associated with any political party. But we believe that Hindus should rise above political beliefs and unite and have respect for their spiritual heritage, faith and culture. We believe in living in harmony with people of different religions. Samrat Sarkar, a youth from Birhi in South 24 Parganas, who is associated with the VHP, said he had attended the recitation of the shlokas by lakhs of people. He said that this program should not be used for political purposes. Senior BJP leaders including Union Minister and former state president Sukant Majumdar, Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari, former MP Locket Chatterjee and MLA Agnimitra Paul attended the event. Prominent religious leaders like Swami Pradiptananda Maharaj and Dhirendra Shastri of Bageshwar Dham along with senior monks from various monasteries and Hindu religious sects also participated.
Geeta for all 140 crore people
This program named ‘Panch Lakho Konthe Geeta Paath’ (Chanting of Geeta by five lakh voices) was organized by Sanatan Sanskriti Sansad. This parliament is a group of monks and spiritual leaders from various monasteries and religious institutions. Paul said that Geeta is not only for Hindus, it is for all the 140 crore people of India. Organizers said the event aims to invoke the spiritual heritage of West Bengal and promote social harmony. He claimed that this is the largest such mass lesson in the state and possibly the country. Karthik Maharaj said that spiritual practice can restore peace and direction in an environment of division. Extensive arrangements were made for crowd management, security and emergency medical services. Three big platforms were built and security was tightened in central Kolkata. Spiritual leadership was given by Swami Gyananandji Maharaj of Geeta Manishi Mahamandal.
