Court Decision: Ten accused were sentenced to imprisonment. Seven accused, including the MLA, were sentenced to four years imprisonment under the SC/ST Act.
Court decision: A court of Tarn Taran on Friday sentenced Khadur Sahib to the current AAP MLA Manjinder Singh Lalpura to four years imprisonment. The MLA was sentenced two days after being convicted in a case of molestation and attack in 2013. On Wednesday, six other people convicted in connection with the case were also sentenced to four years. The court of Additional Sessions Judge Prem Kumar fixed the amount of sentence. The case was registered under the relevant sections, including 354 (an attack or use of criminal force with the intention of dissolving her modesty on a woman), 323 (punishment for voluntarily hurt) and 506 of the Indian Penal Code (criminal threats) and SC/ST Act.
Woman accused of attack
The court has sentenced the current MLA to four years under the SC/ST Act, three years in section 354, one year under section 506 and one year under section 323. Ten accused were sentenced to imprisonment. Seven accused, including the MLA, were sentenced to four years imprisonment under the SC/ST Act. The remaining three were sentenced to one year imprisonment under various sections of IPC. After the conviction, the MLA was taken into custody soon after the court was convicted. The complainant woman, who belongs to the Scheduled Castes (SC) community, was allegedly attacked by accused persons, including some policemen of Lalpura and Tarn Taran police on March 3, 2013.

The incident occurred when the complainant came to the wedding venue for a wedding ceremony with his family members. The complainant’s counsel had earlier said that Lalpura was a taxi driver at that time. The incident was widely condemned and the Supreme Court, taking automatic cognizance, directed the victim and her cousin Jagjit Singh, who were an eyewitness, and protecting the paramilitary force for her family members. Lalpura contested the 2022 assembly elections from Khadur Sahib seat and defeated Ramanjit Singh Sikki of Congress by a margin of 16,491 votes. During the hearing, the security system of the court premises was tightened.
