Government lawyer Hiten Wanegaonkar assured the court that an FIR would be registered by SIT by Saturday (May 3).
Mumbai: The Bombay High Court on Wednesday asked why an FIR was not registered against five policemen. On negligence, the court reprimanded the SIT. The Bombay High Court said that this is a “very regrettable situation”. After strict remarks by the High Court that he would be obliged to initiate contempt action. Government lawyer Hiten Wanegaonkar assured the court that an FIR would be registered by SIT by Saturday (May 3).
A bench of Justice Revathi Mohite Dera and Justice Neela Gokhale accepted Vengaonkar’s assurance. On April 7, the High Court ordered Joint Commissioner of Crime Branch Lakhmi Gautam to constitute a special investigation team to investigate Shinde’s death and register an FIR against the five policemen accused in the magistrate’s investigation report for Shinde’s death. Last week, the High Court strongly criticized the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID), which was initially investigating the case and did not hand over the cases of the case to the SIT.

On Wednesday, when the High Court asked whether the FIR was registered, the government lawyer Hiten Wanegaonkar gave a negative reply. Angered by the answer, the bench said that when a cognizable offense was formed, the police should have put their minds and should have filed an FIR. The police has been responsible not to let the public’s trust in the system to decrease. This is an unnatural death. The bench said that in the event of his order not being followed, he will be obliged to initiate contempt action. The bench commented, “This is a disregard of the instructions of this court. We are not satisfied. This is a very regrettable situation. Now we are forced to issue contempt. Asked the SIT to show some dedication and take the matter to a logical conclusion.
The accused was shot dead inside the police van
Shinde (24), accused of sexual harassment in Badlapur in Thane district, was shot dead inside a police van on 23 September 2024 while taking Kalyan from Taloja Jail. The escorting police team claimed that they shot an officer in self -defense after snatching the gun and shooting. The parents filed a petition in the High Court demanding an independent inquiry. The investigation report conducted by the magistrate convicted five policemen.
