Bihar News: Bihar government has urged the Center to release Rs 7,748.49 crore pending under PMAY-G and MGNREGA. Rural Development Minister Shravan Kumar met Shivraj Singh Chauhan and demanded funds for housing construction and labor payment. Said that work is hampered due to lack of funds in the schemes. The Bihar government on Thursday urged the Central government to immediately release Rs 7,748.49 crore pending under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Gramin (PMAY-G) and Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA). Bihar Rural Development Minister Shravan Kumar met Union Rural Development Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan in New Delhi and requested to release the second part of the first installment of PMAY-G and the entire second installment i.e. Rs 4,491 crore to complete the construction of pucca houses for the poor in rural areas.
Work stopped due to lack of money
He also demanded immediate release of Rs 3,257.49 crore for payment to laborers employed under MGNREGA. According to a statement issued by the state rural development department, the ministers discussed several central schemes being implemented in Bihar, including PMAY-G, MGNREGA and Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana-National Rural Livelihood Mission (DAY-NRLM). Minister Shravan Kumar said that due to non-release of funds as per the procedures of the ministry, the implementation of these schemes is being hindered. During the meeting, the progress of each scheme and the status of pending funds were reviewed. Regarding PMAY-G, it has been said that only the first part of the first installment i.e. Rs 1,497 crore has been released so far in the financial year 2025-26. The second part of the first installment and the entire second installment totaling an estimated Rs 4,491 crore are still outstanding. So far, 11,35,799 families have received the first installment, 7,46,992 families have received the second installment and 3,26,770 families have received the third installment. At present, payment of second installment to 3,88,807 beneficiaries and third installment to 4,20,222 beneficiaries is pending.
3,257.49 crore outstanding on the Center
The minister said that total liabilities of Rs 3,257.49 crore (including arrears for FY 2025-26) under the main head of MGNREGA are still outstanding. These include Rs 623.57 crore from 2023-24 and earlier years, Rs 2,119.86 crore from 2024-25 and Rs 514.05 crore from 2025-26. An additional amount of Rs 1,577.99 crore is required from the Central Government to repay these important liabilities. The ministry has approved an annual action plan of Rs 4,221 crore for 2025-26 for DAY-NRLM. However, against the sanctioned amount, only Rs 1,407 crore has been released so far, while the remaining amount is pending. Shravan Kumar, who is also holding the charge of the Transport Department, also met Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari in the capital.
