Maratha Reservation: The BJP on Sunday targeted senior leader Sharad Pawar and accused him of failing to take steps for the welfare of the Maratha community while in power. The BJP targeted the NCP (SP) chief at a time when Pawar said a day earlier that a constitutional amendment is necessary to remove the 52 percent limit imposed by the Supreme Court on Kota. On Sunday, Pawar’s daughter and NCP (SP) MP Supriya Sule faced anger of the Maratha protesters at Azad Maidan in South Mumbai, when they visited the performance site of Jarange, who have been fast since Friday for Maratha reservation. The protesters stopped Sule’s car and raised slogans against her father and former Union Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar. After besieging Sule, BJP MLC Praveen Darekar said that many Maratha youth were unhappy with the stand taken by Sharad Pawar on the Maratha Kota issue.

Backward classes are protesting against reservation

BJP MLC Praveen Darekar said that Pawar was part of the previous state and central governments for many years, but he did not take any concrete decision regarding reservation for Marathas in educational institutions and government jobs. Darekar told a news channel that some of these youths may have expressed their feelings against Pawar, when his daughter and Lok Sabha member Supriya Sule visited the ongoing protest site of Jarange at Azad Maidan. The agricultural community of the Marathas, citing ‘Kunbi’, is demanding reservation for the community under the OBC category, which the backward class is strongly opposing. Taking a sarcasm at Pawar, BJP leader and minister Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil asked why the experienced politician, who has been the Chief Minister of Maharashtra and Union Minister for a decade, did not take any step before. Vikhe Patil said that Pawar is now talking about amending the Constitution to resolve the issue of Maratha reservation.

Pawar did not do any work even while in power

Why did he not raise this issue while in front of the Mandal Commission or in power? He then did not make sure to include the Marathas. Instead of preaching them now, it should be clarified whether the Marathas can get reservation under OBC (category) or not. Pawar said on Saturday that the Supreme Court has set a 52 percent limit on total reservation and amendment in the constitution is necessary to increase it. He said that the Supreme Court had set a limit of 52 percent on reservation, but the court confirmed 72 percent quota in Tamil Nadu. Pawar further said that he is discussing the need for constitution amendment with other MPs. Meanwhile, Darekar alleged that Pawar never worked in favor of the Maratha community while in power. He said that whether it is the Mandal Commission which has given reservation to the OBC or any other decision, Pawar could work in the interest of the Maratha community while in power, but it never happened. Sule is meeting people, while they have no constitutional power to find solutions. It is possible that due to this frustration, some Marathi youth have opposed them in Azad Maidan.
