BMC Elections: Amidst the ongoing differences within the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA), Congress has taken a big decision. The party will field its candidates on all 227 seats. The workers have pledged to hoist the Congress flag in BMC. Congress leader Varsha Gaikwad said on Saturday that the party is preparing to contest the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections independently. Addressing the party meeting, Mumbai Congress President Gaikwad called upon party workers to take a pledge to hoist the Congress flag in BMC. He said that Congress is preparing for all 227 seats. Elections for BMC, the country’s richest civic body, are likely to be held in January 2026.

Mumbai Congress President gave indications

Gaikwad made this statement in the presence of senior leaders including AICC General Secretary Ramesh Chennithala and Maharashtra Congress President Harshvardhan Sapkal. Congress’s stance of going alone comes amid the possibility of Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray and his cousin Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) leader Raj Thackeray joining hands for the BMC elections. In view of Raj Thackeray’s aggressive stance against North Indian immigrants, a section of Congress is against forging an alliance with him. Gaikwad said that earlier when journalists had asked Chennithala whether the party would contest the BMC elections alone, he had said that such decisions are left to the local units.

Workers should be alert about voter list

He said that we have told Chennithala that Congress leaders and workers want to contest elections only with like-minded parties and groups. He said that officials have been informed about organizational preparations. The Lok Sabha MP urged the party workers to work for the next two months and be alert about the voter list. In 2019, Congress formed MVA in alliance with its old rival Shiv Sena along with NCP. After the split between Shiv Sena and NCP in 2022 and 2023, their rival factions formed an alliance with the ruling BJP.
