Bora said that Himanta Biswa Sarma is sure that if the Congress declares Gaurav Gogoi as the CM candidate, he will lose the election.
Guwahati: The Congress has strongly attacked Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday. The Congress claimed that Himant Biswa Sarma is trying to present MP Gaurav Gogoi as an ISI agent for fear of losing the upcoming assembly elections. Because the BJP knows that if Gogoi is made the CM candidate of Congress, then the ruling Himant government will lose in the 2026 assembly elections. Senior Congress leader and former Rajya Sabha MP Ripun Bora said that Sarma is scared of the popularity of Gogoi, who proved his expertise outside and inside Parliament, which was nominated as the party’s Deputy Leader in the Lok Sabha.

Bora said that Himanta Biswa Sarma is sure that if the Congress declares Gaurav Gogoi as the CM candidate, he will lose the election. Sarma has already considered Gogoi as his contender because he has acceptance in the entire state. He said that in 2024, winning the Jorhat Lok Sabha seat, despite the BJP throwing full strength to defeat Gogoi, actually extended the stature of the MP. Bora said, “Trying to install Gogoi as an ISI agent to clear his way for CM 2026 of Assam. However, no one is taking him seriously as he has not given any evidence in support of his claims.
Said- Many Pakistani people are doing legally work in India
Dismissing all the allegations of Sarma, the former Rajya Sabha MP said that Gogoi’s British wife Elizabeth Kalbourne works in an international NGO, which has a network in Pakistan as well as other countries. She said that she must have gone to Pakistan or she must have received salary for her work, what is the problem in this? Similarly, many Pakistani people are working legally in India. The wife of our Foreign Minister S Jaishankar is a Japanese citizen and his second child is a British citizen. Does this mean that we should doubt Jaishankar’s patriotism? The Congress leader also gave an example of the younger son and brother of National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, who has had relations with Pakistan in professional career.
Why Himant Biswa is upset when Gogoi goes legitimate to Pakistan?
He said that similarly many Indian businessmen are doing business with Pakistan. If Gaurav Gogoi went legitimately to Pakistan and his wife worked in Pakistan legally, what is the problem? She can retain her original British passport, as she travels often and has many benefits of British passports. Bora also emphasized that since Gogoi needs to travel widely, his children are with their mother and citizenship has been kept British for convenience. He said, “If the Indian government has no objection to any issue raised against Gogoi, then why Sarma has become so restless? They are nothing but irrational.
People will give a befitting reply in 2026 elections
Bora also claimed that Sarma raised this Pakistani issue and after knowing the possibility of the party’s central leadership being made Gogoi as the state president of Assam Congress, tried to confuse Gogoi in it. He said, “India’s oldest party Sarma is not afraid of such tricks. He said that in the 2026 elections, the people of Assam would give him a befitting reply. He claimed that Gogoi’s British wife Elizabeth Kalbourne had traveled between India and Pakistan 19 times. Sarma also alleged that Gogoi had taken up Pakistan’s involvement and took training there. Criticized Sarma for allegations of alleged Pakistani relations of the MP and questioned his mental state on the domestic front.
