Imphal: Security forces have thwarted the conspiracy to shake Manipur. Security forces on Saturday seized 90 firearms and more than 700 ammunition and explosives by campaigning in five districts of Manipur. A senior police officer said that several weapons seized were looted from the police arsenal after ethnic conflicts in the state in May 2023. The police officer said that while taking action on a secret information, several places in Imphal East, Imphal West, Thobbal, Kakching and Bishnupur districts were raided simultaneously. 90 weapons including AK series, one M16 rifle, five INSAS rifle, one INSAS LMG, four SLR, 20 pistols, four carbines, seven .303 rifles and eight other rifles were seized during the raids killed by joint teams of Manipur Police, CRPF, BSF, Army and Assam Rifles. Wireless handsets were also seized.
Weapons were robbed from police arsenal
During a press conference at the state police headquarters, Zone II Inspector General of Police Kabib said that some of the seized weapons were allegedly looted from our police arsenal. On May 3, 2023, the miscreants looted more than 6,000 firearms from various police weapons after erupting ethnic violence in the state. More than 3,000 have been recovered from the looted firearms, including more than 1,500 after the implementation of President’s rule in the state in February this year. Confirming its commitment to promote a peaceful and safe Manipur, the police have urged the public to cooperate with law enforcement agencies and security forces and report any suspected activity immediately or provide information related to illegal firearms to the nearest police station or central control room.

Since May 2023, 260 people were killed and thousands of people have died in ethnic violence among the cookie people living in Maetai and nearby hilly areas in the Imphal Valley in Manipur. President’s rule is in force in Manipur from February 13 this year, when Chief Minister N Biren Singh resigned from his post and the assembly was suspended.
