janajaateey gaurav divas: Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Saturday that the contribution of the tribal community in the country’s freedom struggle was important, but the Congress did not accept it. Congress neglected the community during its 60 years of rule. He said that the contribution of tribal freedom fighters was ignored so that the credit could be given to some families. He was addressing a huge gathering in Dediapada town of Narmada district of Gujarat on the birth anniversary of tribal icon Lord Birsa Munda on Tribal Pride Day. Before his speech, the Prime Minister inaugurated and laid the foundation stone of development projects costing more than Rs 9,700 crore. Modi said that whenever it came to the country’s respect, self-respect and freedom, our tribal community stood at the forefront. Our freedom struggle is the biggest example of this. Many freedom fighters emerged from the tribal community and carried the torch of freedom forward.

Modi went to Munda’s house on his birth anniversary

Citing tribal freedom fighters from Gujarat like Govind Guru, Roopsingh Nayak and Motilal Tejawat, the PM said that countless chapters of the freedom struggle are filled with examples of tribal pride and bravery. Modi claimed that the tribal community shed its blood for independence, but its contribution was ignored so that the credit could be given to a few families. He said that we cannot forget the contribution of tribal communities in the freedom movement. But in the desire to give the credit for independence to a few families, the sacrifice and dedication of my tribal brothers and sisters were ignored. Modi said that because of this attitude no one remembered Lord Birsa Munda before 2014. He told that Birsa Munda’s family members were with him on the stage. Modi was the first Prime Minister to visit Munda’s house. Modi further said that the celebration of Tribal Pride Day provides an opportunity to remember the “injustice meted out to tribal brothers and sisters”.

Tribal welfare is BJP’s top priority

He alleged that the Congress party, which ruled the country for six decades, left the tribals to their fate. Although the tribals were facing many problems like malnutrition and lack of healthcare, education and connectivity, the Congress governments remained inactive. He said that tribals are also connected with Lord Ram. They come from that era. But those who ruled for six decades did not realize that something needed to be done for the development of such a large tribal community. Tribal welfare has been the top priority of BJP and we have resolved to end this injustice. Modi said that former Prime Minister and late BJP veteran Atal Bihari Vajpayee had established a separate ministry for the tribal community at the Centre. But, when Congress came back to power after Vajpayee, it neglected the tribal community for the next 10 years. Referring to acclaimed sportspersons like Mary Kom, Dutee Chand and Bhaichung Bhutia, the Prime Minister said that tribal youth have made an important contribution in making India proud on the global stage.
