AdR Report: According to the report, the number of MPs facing criminal cases in the 18th Lok Sabha is the highest ever. Out of 543 MPs, 251 (46 percent) have criminal cases registered.

ADR Report: After the results of Lok Sabha Elections 2024, the Association of Democratic Reforms (ADR) has released a report on the background of newly elected MPs. According to the report, the number of MPs facing criminal cases in the 18th Lok Sabha is the highest ever. Out of 543 MPs, 251 (46 percent) have criminal cases registered. Out of these, 27 MPs are whom the court has already convicted. According to ADR data, since 2009, the number of MPs with criminal cases has increased by 55 percent. In 2004, the number of such MPs was 125 (23 percent), 162 (30 percent) in 2009, 185 (34 percent) in 2014 and 233 (43 percent) in 2019. But in 2024 this number has increased to 251 (46 percent).

170 MPs raped, serious allegations like murder

Talking about serious criminal cases, this time there are 170 MPs (31 percent) who have serious allegations like rape, murder, attempt to murder, kidnapping and crime against women. Comparison, this number was 76 (14 percent) in 2009, 112 (21 percent) in 2014 and 159 (29 percent) in 2019. That is, the number of such MPs has increased continuously in every election. According to the parties, BJP, who won 240 seats this time, has criminal cases against 94 MPs (39 percent). Out of 99 Congress, 49 MPs (49 percent) and 21 out of 37 of Samajwadi Party have criminal cases registered.

Worrying for democratic system

In serious cases, 63 BJP MPs (26 percent), 32 Congress MPs (32 percent) and 17 SP MPs (46 percent) are included. Other parties are facing Seven (24 percent) of Trinamool Congress (TMC), six (27 percent) of DMK, five (31 percent) of TDP and four (57 percent) MPs of Shiv Sena are facing serious criminal cases. This report of ADR has once again revealed the seriousness of criminals in politics. Increasing the number of public representatives facing allegations of crime in Parliament with every election is a worrying sign for the democratic system.
