Elephant Attack: On Friday, a wild elephant crushed a woman in Bilaspur district of Chhattisgarh, resulting in her death. Whereas three people including son and daughter were seriously injured in the attack. Kumari Bai Yadav (45), her son Durga Prasad (13) and her 17-year-old daughter, residents of Khaprikhol village in Sipat forest area, were attacked by the elephant in the early hours of Friday when they were sleeping in the backyard of their house to protect the paddy crop, a forest department official said. The official said that the wild elephant attacked Kumari Bai, killing her on the spot, while Durga Prasad suffered serious injuries on her legs and head. His daughter was also injured. The woman’s death created an uproar among the family members. The elephant attack spread panic in the entire village.

Forest department employees reached the spot

Forest Department official said that as soon as the information was received, Forest Department employees reached the spot and sent the woman’s body for post-mortem, while her children have been admitted to the Government Chhattisgarh Ayurved Institute (CIMS) in Bilaspur city. He further said that a few hours later, the same elephant attacked Rajesh Dhurri (22), a resident of Dhuripara village under Bilaspur forest area, when he was going to take bath near his house in the village. Dhuripara village is about four kilometers away from Khaprikhol village. The forest officer said that Rajesh has suffered serious injuries on his head and his leg is broken. His family members have admitted him to a private hospital in Bilaspur.

Forest Department gave assistance to the family members

The forest officer said that this wild elephant has been separated from its herd for more than a week and is roaming in the area. He said that the family of the deceased has been given Rs 25,000 as initial relief amount and the rest of the compensation will be given after completion of the due process. He also informed that both the seriously injured persons have been given financial assistance of Rs 5,000. In the last decade, human-elephant conflict has become a matter of concern in Chhattisgarh, especially in the northern parts. The most affected districts are Raigarh, Korba, Surajpur, Balrampur and Jashpur. Forest officials said that around 320 people have died in elephant attacks in the state in the last five years.
