Verdict on Sheikh Hasina: On Monday, Bangladesh’s International Criminal Tribunal (ICT-BD) is scheduled to pronounce its verdict on former Prime Minister Hasina in absentia. Before the decision, security has been tightened in Bangladesh today. Ahead of a special tribunal’s verdict in the case against ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina over alleged crimes against humanity, the prosecution on Sunday insisted on the death penalty for her.

Demand for strict punishment for Hasina

ICT-BD prosecutor Ghazi MH Tamim told reporters, “We have demanded the maximum possible punishment for Hasina. Additionally, we have requested to confiscate the property of the convicts so that it can be distributed among the families of the martyrs and injured victims.” Tamim said the ICT-BD law would prevent Hasina from challenging the Supreme Court’s decision unless she surrenders or is arrested within 30 days of the decision. Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) personnel have been deployed in four districts including Dhaka.

Order to fire on protesters

Apart from the deployment of BGB, police in Dhaka have been ordered to open fire on violent protesters as tension rises over the law and order situation ahead of Monday’s verdict. Local newspapers quoted Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner SM Sajat Ali as saying, “This right is clearly provided in our law. I had said on the wireless that whoever sets fire to a bus or throws a crude bomb with intent to kill should be shot.”

Hasina, her Interior Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal and then Inspector General of Police (IGP) Chaudhry Abdullah al-Mamun are accused of alleged crimes against humanity during anti-government protests last year. There are charges in this case under five sections, the first section of which accuses the defendants of murder, attempt to murder, torture and other inhuman acts.

Hasina declared a fugitive in Bangladesh

The tribunal framed charges against the three on July 10. Hasina and Kamal were tried in their absence and the court declared them fugitives. Meanwhile, Hasina, in an audio message uploaded on her Awami League website, urged party leaders and workers not to worry about punishment, saying, “We have seen enough of these attacks and cases. Let them prosecute me, I don’t care, I will die one day in my life, but I am working for the people of the country and will continue to do so.”
