HAQ Release Controversy: Shah Bano case had sparked debate across the country in the 80s. Now the same story is in discussion again, but this time the reason is a film named ‘Haq’. This film is said to be inspired by this case. Emraan Hashmi and Yami Gautam are in lead roles in this film. However, even before the release of ‘Haq’, this film is embroiled in controversies. Actually, Shah Bano Begum’s daughter Siddika Begum Khan has approached the Madhya Pradesh High Court regarding this film.

Know the whole matter

Siddika Begum Khan has filed a petition in Indore Bench demanding a ban on the release of the film ‘Haq’. He says that the film is showing the truth of his mother’s life in a wrong manner. Not only this, this film has been made without the permission of the family. By the way, this film of Imran and Yami has been directed by Suparn S Verma. This movie is going to be released in theaters across the country on November 7, 2025 i.e. coming Friday. Apart from this, lawyer Tausif Warsi, on behalf of Siddika Begum Khan, said that this petition was heard for the first time in the court on Monday.

Who was Shah Bano Begum?

Shahbano was a resident of Indore. In 1978, her lawyer-husband Mohammad Ahmed Khan divorced her. After this Shahbano filed a petition in the court for maintenance. This matter gradually reached the Supreme Court and in the year 1985, the court gave a historic verdict in favor of Shah Bano. In this decision it was said that even after divorce, Muslim women have the right to maintenance under the law. However, some Muslim organizations protested against this decision of the court. For this reason, the Rajiv Gandhi government enacted the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Divorce) Act in the year 1986. This new law made that historic decision of the Supreme Court ineffective.

Why did the controversy increase now?

Siddika Begum Khan says that her mother’s life is not the imagination of a film, but a story of real struggle. It is not right to show it without permission and by distorting it. Apart from this, the family claims that many scenes shown in the film are very different from the truth. Now everyone’s eyes are on the next decision of the High Court. If the court puts a stay, then the release of ‘Haq’ may be postponed for the time being. At the same time, if this film gets the green signal, then the story of Shah Bano will once again make people think on the big screen.
