Flood threat in Punjab due to continuous rains: Sutlej, Beas and Ravi rivers on boom, migration starts from Ferozepur

Flood crisis in Punjab: The continuous rains in Punjab for the last two days have worsened the flood situation in Kapurthala district, while people in Ferozepur have started vacating their houses in particular. Sutlej, Beas and Ravi rivers and seasonal small rivers are in spate due to heavy rains, excess water from Pong and Bhakra dams, which has created flood -like conditions in many districts of Punjab. The flood situation in many villages of Kapurthala district deteriorated after continuous rains on Tuesday and the rising Beas river submerged the agricultural land on a large scale. The level of flow from Harike to Hussainiwala in Ferozepur district increased again after rain, which created a possibility of flood. Kaluwala, Tandi Wala, Chandiwala, Gatti Rajo Ke, Navi Gatti Rajo Ke, Basti Rahim and many people from other villages have started transporting their belongings to safe places.

Additional Deputy Commissioner’s appeal to vacate village

On Monday night, Additional Deputy Commissioner Damandeep Singh reached the village of Tandewala and also advised the villagers to vacate the village. Kulwant Singh, a resident of Navi Gatti Rajo, said that residents of these villages are living in fear of floods. Kulwant said that we have started packing our essential goods and if the water level rises slightly, then we have to go to safe places with our families. Many families have already kept their goods on their roofs. He further said that he and his family have not slept for the last several days. Swarn Singh, a resident of Kaluwala village, surrounded by Pakistan from three sides and Kaluwala village surrounded by Pakistan, said that the entire crop sown on three acres of land has been submerged. Expressing grief, Swarn Singh said that in 2023 I suffered heavy economic losses and now my crops are almost ruined again because the water level is increasing day by day.

Things in urban areas also worse

Pritam Singh, a resident of the village of Habib, said that the administration should focus on strengthening the embankments on the Sutlej river. Pritam Singh said that the work of strengthening the embankments has been completed. The administration should review the strength of embankments from time to time to ensure the safety of the people. He further said that if something happens to the ‘Bandha’ (soil embankment) from this side, then the entire urban area will be drowned and thousands of people will fall into danger. In the last two days, 45 mm of rain has been recorded in this border district. The situation in the urban area is equally worrying, where many roads are submerged, causing heavy inconvenience to the passengers. In some low -lying areas, people are running in water to knees, while traffic is running at a speed of turtle.

Life disturbed due to torrential rains

The torrential rains also disrupted everyday activities. Some schools had to close before normal to ensure the safety of children. Many villages and lower areas in Sultanpur Lodhi in Kapurthala district were facing flood situation for the last several days. But he said that now continuous rains have worsened the situation. Meanwhile, environmentalist and Rajya Sabha MP Balbir Singh Seechewal said that 36 more villages were flooded due to cracks in a temporary dam near Ahlikalan village, causing the paddy crop to submerge.
