Won for the first time in 1985
Ahead of the prestigious elections, 75-year-old leader Nitish Kumar announced benefits like increase in social security pension, stipend for Asha and Anganwadi workers besides the much talked about Chief Minister Mahila Rozgar Yojana. Under which more than one crore women have received Rs 10,000 in their bank accounts. Nitish Kumar, who was the Chief Minister of the state for the longest time, remained unperturbed by the criticism and the critics’ allegations that the BJP wanted to treat him like Shinde. The gesture was towards his former Maharashtra counterpart Eknath Shinde, who was ousted from power by the BJP after it outperformed Shiv Sena in the assembly elections in the western state. Born in 1951 in Bakhtiyarpur, Bihar, Nitish Kumar entered politics during the JP movement. He joined the Janata Party and contested his first assembly election in 1977, but lost. His first election victory came in 1985.
