The journey from Lal to Khaki is quite interesting
The dress of the Indian armed forces inherited from its colonial past. The British military tradition was clearly visible in a red dress. When the East India Company camped in Bengal, the country was divided into three presidency Bengal, Bombay and Madras Presidency. The East India Company started appointing local people as soldiers during that time. During that time, the local people who were admitted to the army used to wear a red dress.
Red dress from red
When the soldiers used to wear red colored uniforms, they could be easily identified in the battlefield, which became a big problem and the need for change was felt. In the year 1848, Sir Harry Burnett Lamsden and William Stephen Ryx Hodson introduced a khaki dress instead of Lal. Khaki is a Urdu word that means dust or soil color. In terms of Indian weather and condition, khaki colors were quite sure and British officials liked it a lot. Due to Khaki color, it became very difficult to identify soldiers in the battlefield, that is, this color offered, this method proved to be very effective. Khaki was adopted across India by 1857. Many countries of the world became admissible to this color.
National identity received in 1947
In 1947, when India tasted independence, the British Indian Army was changed to the Indian Army. In order to make itself different from the Pakistani Army, the Indian Army changed its khaki dress with olive-green combat uniform. British symbols were removed from the Indian Army dress and national symbols were replaced. While the Pakistan Army chose half a moon mark for its army dress, the Indian Army adopted the Ashoka sign.
Change again for a difficult challenge
During the 1980s and 1990s, the Indian Army faced a lot of complications due to the color of the dress, especially in extremely sensitive areas like Northeast and Jammu and Kashmir. Because of this, the color of the dress felt the need to do this that no one could identify it easily and also show color. In the 1980s, green and brown colors were added to the Indian Army dress so that the soldiers get mixed up in the forests and hilly areas in such a way that the enemies could not recognize them.
Change also took place in the year 2000
In the year 2000, there was another major change in the Indian Army dress. During this time, the pattern used in the French army was adopted according to Indian needs. With the help of this pattern, in difficult conditions, the use of the conditions of soldiers there became even easier, that is, such a pattern so that they could not be seen easily and can reach very close to the enemy and pile it up. This was the same pattern of Indian Army dress that we saw in Bollywood for about two decades. This pattern was perfectly suitable for forests and height areas but it did not prove to be effective in desert areas like Rajasthan.
Historical changes in 2022
In 2022, there was another major change in the Indian Army dress. On the occasion of Army Day, the Indian Army launched its new uniform which was designed with the National Institute of Fashion Technology. In this new dress, there was also a cotton-polyester mix, due to which the uniform became more ventilated and could dry quickly. From forests to desert -like condition, this dress proved to be absolutely suitable. This color does not look easily.
