QS Ranking 2025: Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi has been declared India’s best institute in the QS World University Sustainability Rankings. After this, IIT Bombay is at second place and IIT Kharagpur is at third place. This time a big change has been seen at the global level. Sweden’s Lund University has become the world’s number-1 institution for the first time since the start of the ranking in 2023. The University of Toronto, which was at the top position in the last two years 2024 and 2025, has slipped to second place this time. Meanwhile, UK’s University College London (UCL) has climbed two places to third place. This ranking has special significance for India, because this year 26 new Indian universities have joined the list. With this, India has joined the higher education systems of those four countries of the world, whose more than 100 institutions make a place in this global ranking.

Improvement in ranking of six IITs

The list released on Tuesday said that out of the 15 IITs included in the ranking this year, six have improved their ranking in 2026 compared to 2025. IIT Delhi is one of the six IITs that have made significant progress since the initial ranking three years ago. Many Indian universities achieved their highest scores in the 2026 edition of this ranking, including nine in the top 700. Vellore Institute of Technology, IIT Roorkee, Shoolini University of Biotechnology and Management Sciences, Lovely Professional University, Panjab University, Banaras Hindu University, National Institute of Technology (NIT) Rourkela, IIT BHU and UPES are the Indian universities in the top 700 that achieved their highest position this year.

India’s role is important in sustainable development

QS CEO Jessica Turner said that overall Indian universities excel in knowledge exchange and environmental sustainability. Said that institutions like IIT and Delhi University have shown individual excellent performances. The role of higher education in the fight against climate change has been highlighted in these rankings. India’s role in sustainable development cannot be underestimated. Turner said development across the globe will require strong research capabilities and green skills. It is important that support continues to nurture talent in Indian universities.
