India-Nepal Relations: Many former Indian ambassadors have expressed concern over the violence and anarchy spreading due to large -scale anti -government protests in Nepal. It is said that New Delhi should monitor this situation very closely. Some also emphasized that India’s neighborhood is going through a round of upheaval, which is not a healthy sign. Former Indian ambassadors cited examples of public protests led by youth on a large scale, causing political upheaval in Sri Lanka and Bangladesh in recent years and governments fell. The Himalayan nation is struggling with a serious political crisis, when Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli resigned on Tuesday amid mass demonstrations in Kathmandu and protesters set fire to the private house of the Nepali leader in Balkot. The protesters attacked the houses of several former ministers. Violent protests of youth against the government’s ban on social media sites shook Nepal on Monday.
Emphasis on ‘wait and see’ policy
The former Indian ambassadors told PTI that it came after the incidents in Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. In this context, there have been many incidents of instability in neighboring countries, due to which the governance system collapsed and their leaders fled. This is clearly not a healthy sign. Rajamoni, who served as the Ambassador of India in the Netherlands from 2017 to 2020, and many other ambassadors suggested that India should allow the home process to run in Nepal. New Delhi should carefully monitor the situation coming in the neighboring country. Former Ambassador Rajamoni said that I think we have to wait for things to calm down. We should look at it very carefully, because it can have many effects on our interests in us and Nepal. Ashok Kant, who served in Nepal as Deputy Chief of Mission in Kathmandu from 1997 to 2000, also called for a ‘wait and see’ approach. He told PTI that my own experience has been that we should let the household process run. I do not think we can really have a role at this time. Our intervention will become an unproductive task. Therefore, we have to see and assess the situation first.
Emphasis on safety of Indians in Nepal
However, Ashok Kant emphasized the need to ensure that Indians should be protected in Nepal and the interests of India should be protected. The Indian Embassy in Kathmandu issued emergency contact numbers for its citizens in Nepal on Tuesday and asked them to contact any emergency or assistance. On the suggestion that the turmoil in Nepal is happening at a time when India-China relations are improving. Kantha said that I think we should not look at all these things with the glasses of our relations with China. Rajmani also reiterated his thoughts and said that I do not think China is a factor here, but he insisted that our neighborhood is really in turmoil. He said that there is stability after 2022 protests in Sri Lanka case, and Bangladesh is moving towards elections. Myanmar still remains unstable, but is also moving towards elections. The Taliban is also sitting in Afghanistan, and Pakistan also has uncertainty. So overall, this is a difficult neighborhood for us. Therefore, we need to adopt more attention and efficient diplomacy.
