He is the first Muslim mayor of New York. Mamdani’s victory is a big blow to Donald Trump, because he had been continuously opposing Mamdani. In the results announced on Wednesday, Mamdani defeated both his rivals, independent candidate Andrew Cuomo and Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa. Earlier, current Mayor Eric Adams had withdrawn his name from the election race in September.

After winning the election, Zohran Mamdani said that as mayor he would bring major changes to New York. He announced that he would immediately freeze the rents of all renters and build affordable housing to reduce the rent burden on the general public. He promised fast and free bus service and said that bus fares would be completely abolished in the entire city. Zohran Mamdani, 34, was born in Uganda and raised in New York City. Zoharan is the son of renowned Indian filmmaker Mira Nair and Ugandan Indian-origin writer Mahmood Mamdani. He is a member of the New York State Assembly and considers himself a Democratic Socialist. His victory is being considered a proud moment for NRIs in America. Mamdani’s victory would give the city its first Muslim mayor and its youngest leader in generations.

The election has made Mamdani a national celebrity as he has earned the ire of Trump and other Republicans. Trump also threatened to cut funding to New York City if Mamdani won. Now it remains to be seen how Trump increases Mamdani’s problems in anger. A day before the election, Trump had endorsed Cuomo, saying Mamdani would bring “disaster” to the city and encouraging Sliwa supporters to vote for the former governor.
