Sports Ministry source said that the stadium will be demolished. Once the project starts, all the offices located inside the stadium, including the National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA), National Dope Testing Laboratory (NDTL) and Income Tax Department, will be shifted. A Sports Ministry source said that at present more than 100 acres of land of the stadium is not being utilized properly. The Sports City will ensure that we have the necessary infrastructure to host major games, training facilities, accommodation for players during competition and entertainment. The headquarters of Sports Authority of India is also located in this stadium. The Sports City project requires coordination between several ministries and departments, including the Urban Development Ministry. Given the long process, it is not possible to start it immediately.

Study of sports cities of Qatar and Australia

The source said that the ministry is very serious about taking this process forward. Sports cities in Qatar and Australia are being evaluated so that the framework can be finalized. Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya was recently in Doha and according to reliable information, he visited the Sports City there. Doha Sports City is spread over 617 acres. It has facilities for football, aquatics and 13 different indoor sports, apart from an academy. It also has a specialized orthopedic and sports medicine hospital. Australia’s multi-purpose facilities include the Docklands Stadium in Melbourne, where cricket, Australian rules football, rugby, cricket and soccer matches can be played. The Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Sports Complex in Ahmedabad is an example from our country, where facilities for cricket, aquatics, tennis and athletics besides other sports are available. It is spread over 250 acres and is built at a cost of Rs 4600 crore. The city is currently bidding to host the 2036 Olympic Games. Ahmedabad is to be handed over the hosting of the 2030 Commonwealth Games at the end of this month.

Nehru Stadium was built for the Asian Games

It has also hosted some cricket ODI matches in 1984 and 1991. Before the ICC found it unsuitable for the game due to technical reasons. The stadium is also used for non-sporting commercial activities, where Indian and international singers regularly hold concerts. The Sports Authority of India (SAI) has recently increased the booking price for such events and also added a provision of penalty for not returning the stadium in good condition at the conclusion of such events.
