Kharge said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi failed to make a trade agreement with America despite several months of talks. Now Trump is intimidating and forcing us.
New Delhi: Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge said on Thursday that US President Donald Trump’s decision to impose 50 percent tariff on Indian goods is a major failure of foreign policy. The Modi government does not understand how to deal with it. A day after Trump imposed an additional fine of 25 percent on India on purchasing Russian oil, Kharge said that this decision came at a time when our diplomacy is very falter. He said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi failed to make a trade agreement with America despite several months of talks and now Trump is intimidating and forcing us. The Congress President said in a post on X that India’s national interest is highest. He said that no country which punishes India arbitrarily understands the strong structure that has made India.
Modi remained silent even on the mediation of the ceasefire
Kharge claimed that from threats from the seventh fleet to the restrictions of nuclear tests, we have played our relations with the US with self-respect and dignity. 50% tariff of Trump has come at a time when our own diplomacy is devastating. When Narendra Modi ji claimed that he had mediates the ceasefire, you remained silent. He has claimed at least 30 times and this number is increasing. On November 30, 2024, Trump threatened to impose 100% tariff on BRICS countries. Prime Minister Modi was sitting there, smiling clearly, while Trump declared ‘BRICS dead’. The Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha said that Trump has been planning a mutual tariff for months. We all knew about it. He said that some changes have been made in the budget to reduce the impact on our major areas like agriculture, MSME and various industries. Your ministers have been talking about interacting with America for months. Some of them camped in Washington for several days.
India’s trade agreement fails with America
He claimed that you failed to make a business agreement with America. You had more than six months. Now Mr. Trump is intimidating and forcing us but you are silent. He said that India’s export to the US is about Rs 7.51 lakh crore (2024) and a lump sum fee of 50 percent will impose an economic burden of Rs 3.75 lakh crore. Our areas such as MSME, agriculture, dairy engineering goods, electronic goods, gems and jewelery, drug manufacturing and organic products, petroleum products and cotton clothes will suffer the most. Kharge said that your government does not understand how to deal with it. You cannot blame Congress even 70 years for wastage of this foreign policy. Trump on Wednesday imposed an additional 25 percent tariff on goods coming from India, which is a punishment for continuous purchase of Russian oil by New Delhi. A step that will have a bad effect on areas like textile, sea and leather exports.
