Kharmas Date and Rules: According to the Hindu calendar, the 10th month is Pausha month. Kharmas appears in this month. Kharmas has special importance in Sanatan Dharma. It takes place twice a year. Once when the Sun enters Sagittarius (between March to April) and the second when the Sun enters Pisces (between December to January). The second Kharmas is going to last from December 16, 2025 to January 15, 2025. During Kharmas, all kinds of auspicious functions including marriage, housewarming, mundan and sacred thread stop. Today we will tell you the reason behind why no auspicious work is done in Kharmas.

These auspicious works are not done in Kharmas

It is believed that doing any auspicious work during Kharmas has adverse effects. During this period, no auspicious work will be done, like marriage, upanayana, Duragaman, house warming, house warming etc. People avoid doing any auspicious work during this period and wait for these days to end. After this, auspicious works like marriage and mundan will start again.

Why are auspicious works not done?

According to the scriptures, the Sun enters Sagittarius during Kharmas. During this period, the energy and brightness of the Sun decreases, due to which the effect of auspicious deeds is reduced. For this reason this time has been described as inauspicious in the scriptures. During Kharmas, worship of Gods and Goddesses, chanting, religious rituals and charity have special significance, hence people should do them, but things like marriage, housewarming, starting a business and buying a car or property are prohibited.

Offer Arghya to Sun God in Kharmas

  • Offering Arghya to Sun God in Kharmas has special significance. Every morning, after taking bath, put pure water, red sandalwood and red flowers in a copper pot and offer it to the Sun God and chant the mantra “Om Suryay Namah”. This ritual cures diseases and increases respect.
  • Performing Shraddha, Tarpan and donations to ancestors on Amavasya, Sankranti, Purnima and Ekadashi is considered auspicious. This removes the curse of the ancestors and reduces the problems of life.
  • In the month of Kharmas, worship Lord Vishnu the whole day and donate in temples. This brings blessings of both Lord Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi.
