Odisha lecturer Punjilal Meher killed two people, including the groom by sending a bomb to the wedding gift after an old enmity with the groom’s mother. Now the court has sentenced lecturer Punjilal Meher to life imprisonment.
Odisha Lecturer Gets Life Imprisonment: A lecturer from Odisha has been sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of two people. According to the news agency PTI, the Lecturer of Odisha sent a parcel bomb to the wedding gift in which two people, including the groom, were killed. On Wednesday, 28 May 2025, a court in Balangir district of Odisha while hearing the murder case sentenced the lecturer to life imprisonment.
Old enmity was taken revenge
Punjilal Meher, who was posted as a lecturer at Jyoti Vikas College in Bhangir district, was a professional enmity with the groom’s mother, where she worked as a principal in the college. Police said that for this reason Punjilal conspired to kill his son Soumya and sent a bomb to the wedding gift in 2018. Government lawyer Chittaranjan Kanungo said that the Additional District Judge (ADJ) court of Patnagarh convicted the accused in the case and sentenced him to life imprisonment. The court has sentenced life imprisonment under two sections, 10 years imprisonment under two allegations and seven years imprisonment under another charge. Kanungo said that all the punishment will run together. Government “Lawyer” said, “We said that the matter should be considered as Rarest of Rare Case. However, the court did not consider it one of the rare cases, because all heinous crime cases cannot be considered as this way.” He said that the punishment given by the court will send positive messages in the society.
How much fine imposed?
The court has also imposed a fine of Rs 1.70 lakh on Guilty Lecturer. Kanungo told media persons outside the court that he would be behind bars throughout his life. A man named Soumya Shekhar and his 85 -year -old grandmother were killed in the blast. His wife Seema Sahu suffered serious injuries due to the bursting of a parcel bomb kept as a wedding gift at his house in Patnagarh in Bollengir district on February 23, 2018. The explosion occurred when the groom opened the gift. Following the request of the bride and her family, the then Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik ordered the crime branch to investigate the incident. The Crime Branch took the investigation of the case on March 23, 2018. The investigating agency has said that the intention was to take revenge behind the crime.
