Jamia Millia Islamia: Jamia Millia Islamia has banned students from entering the campus for protesting on the anniversary of the Batla House encounter. Jamia Millia Islamia has banned a PhD scholar from entering the campus for the remaining period of his research. Jamia officials said that the students had organized the march to commemorate the anniversary of the Batla House encounter. An official order issued by the Chief Proctor said that Saurabh Tripathi, a student affiliated with AISA, has been barred from entering the campus. The November 20 order said the university’s disciplinary committee investigated three cases against Tripathi. The first was for disrupting the semester examination on 7th May and creating nuisance, the second for disrupting the peaceful academic and research environment of the university campus on 13th August and the third for unnecessarily organizing a meeting and march in the memory of the Batla House encounter on 19th September.

Disciplinary committee found the student guilty

The Disciplinary Committee held that by organizing the march the student had endangered the safety of students, staff and property of the University. The order said that after reviewing the evidence including CCTV footage, the committee found the student guilty. However, the Disciplinary Committee also took into account the fact that significant efforts of the University are invested in him as a research student of a Central University. The expulsion of student Tripathi was avoided by adopting a soft approach. Instead the committee imposed strict restrictions on the campus, stating that the Jamia Millia Islamia campus would remain off-limits to him for all purposes for the remaining period of his PhD, except the Proctor’s office by prior appointment.

Attack on entire student community: AISA

In the order, the student has been directed to submit a bond of good conduct in future within 10 days and it has been made clear that any further violation will result in cancellation of PhD admission. All India Students Association (AISA) condemned this action. The organization said the events were peaceful protests. Alleged that the administration has punished Tripathi. The organization demanded immediate lifting of the ban, saying it was an attack on the dissent of the entire student community. Tripathi told PTI that this is injustice to a PhD scholar. I will go to court against this. On September 19, several students were detained during a protest organized to mark the 17th anniversary of the Batla House encounter, where AISA reiterated its long-standing demand for a judicial inquiry into the 2008 incident.
