Rat attack in Mizoram: The Mizoram government has issued an alert to prevent a famine -like situation after mice attack in three districts. Lalrindiki, Deputy Director (Plant Protection) of Agriculture Department, said that the attack is related to flourishing of bamboo species called Bombusa Teding (Rothing) after 46 years in 2025. The attack of mice has been reported in many villages of Mamit and Lunglei districts. The government has given instructions to monitor the situation and take necessary steps. He said that the news of rats’ attack has also been received from Leelam village in Setual district. He told that a detailed report is awaited. Lalrindiki reported that 800 Jhoom farmers, who mainly grow rice and soybeans, have been affected by the attacks of mice. He said that out of 2,500 hectares of land under Jhoom farming, about 158 hectares of land has been attacked so far. The district is the most affected by the border of Tripura and Bangladesh, where 769 farmers from 45 villages are facing these attacks.

Agriculture department is keeping an eye on the situation

He said that chemicals or plant protection chemicals that kill mice have been distributed and the teams of Agriculture Department have been sent to the affected villages to tell the farmers and leaders of the village council to tell them how to use them. He said that awareness is being spread about the massive poison of mice and the department is keeping an eye on the situation closely. Lalrindiki said that the district agricultural officials have been instructed to give weekly updates on the situation. He said that till now only the attack has been reported in the traditional Jhoom paddy fields and some soybean gardens. He said that it has also spread to wet rice cultivation. ‘Thingam’, which is repeated in the 48 -year cycle, was last in 1977 in the state. Mizoram last reported the rodent attack in 2022, during which at least nine districts were affected.

70 percent of the population dependent on agriculture

Mizoram faced a famine -like situation in 2007 due to the flowering of Melocaina Baxifra. However, no one died due to timely financial assistance from the Center and comprehensive preparation by the state government. About 70 percent of the state’s population depends on agriculture. The main agricultural system is a slash-and-burn jhoom or transferred farming, which gives bad yield. Due to the widespread efforts of the government, Jhoom agricultural practices have been gradually replaced by proliferation or long-term tree plantation like horticulture or betel nut, grapes and pineapple. The formation of Mizoram was also closely related to famine. The two -decade long rebellion led by the East Underground Mizo National Front (MNF) allegedly began due to the negligence of the Center for the plight of the Mizo people due to ‘deatham’ or famine. MNF signed a historic peace agreement with the Center in 1986 and Mizoram became the 23rd state of the country in 1987.
