Pahalgam Terrorist Attack: Blocking YouTube channel of Pakistan Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif is considered to be the most high-profile digital action in India so far.
Pahalgam Terrorist Attack: After the horrific terrorist attack on April 22 in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, the Government of India has continued the process of strict actions against Pakistan. In this episode, the Modi government of the Center has taken another major step and blocked the official YouTube channel of Pakistan Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif in India. This action has been taken to prevent increasing Indo-Pak tension and misleading information spread from Pakistan after the Pahalgam attack.
Pahalgam attack increased tension
On 22 April, terrorists fired indiscriminately on tourists in the Basaron Valley of Pahalgam, in which 26 people lost their lives and many others were injured. The responsibility of this attack was taken by TRF, the mask organization of Pakistan-backed terrorist organization Lashkar-e-Taiba. This incident created a wave of anger throughout the country, and the Government of India decided to give a strong reply to Pakistan.

Blocking the YouTube channel of Pakistan Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif is considered to be the most high-profile digital action in India so far. The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting took this decision keeping in mind the national security and public system. According to the recommendations of the Ministry of Home Affairs, Pakistani YouTube channels and social media accounts were spreading inflammatory, communally sensitive material and misinformation against India, its army and security agencies.

Earlier, India had blocked 16 major Pakistani YouTube channels, including big names like Don News, Sama TV, Geo News, ARY News and Bol News. These channels collectively had more than 63 million subscribers. Also, Pakistani cricketers Babar Azam, Mohammad Rizwan, Shaheen Afridi, Haris Rauf and actors like Mahira Khan, Hania Aamir’s Instagram accounts were also closed in India.
Action on Pakistani celebrities also
After the Pahalgam attack, India has also tightened up on social media accounts of Pakistani celebrities. YouTube channels of many influential people like former cricketer Shoaib Akhtar, journalist Arzu Kazmi, and commentator Syed Muzammil Shah were blocked. Apart from this, the Instagram account of Pakistani Olympian Arshad Nadeem was also suspended in India. These actions are taken under the emergency powers of the Information Technology Act.
