Mumbai Local Railway News: ATP system developed under ‘Make in India’ will provide new strength to the safety of passengers. Read full news.
Mumbai Local Railway News: Local trains of Western Railway, called Mumbai’s lifeline, will now get the support of ‘armor’ security system developed with domestic technology. According to railway officials, this state-of-the-art anti-colijan system will be activated on all suburban routes of Western Railway by the end of the year 2026. This step will give a new dimension to the efficiency of safety and operation of railway passengers in a crowded city like Mumbai.
What is ‘armor’ and why is it important?
‘Kavach’ is a indigenously developed automatic train protection (ATP) system, which has been prepared under the ‘Make in India’ campaign. This system is capable of controlling the speed of the train, preventing conflicts and protecting from human mistakes. Currently, the local trains in which the Oxylary Warning System (AWS) is using the Western Railway will now be replaced by the armor, as AWS has proved to be unable to stop the signal jump and other serious safety rays several times.
The characteristics of armor and comparison to AWS
While AWS provides only warning signals and braking assistance, the armor establishes real-time communication between train and signaling stations. Through this:
- Automatic braking occurs in case of red signal crossing
- In-cap signaling in low visibility is safe
- Speed monitoring and conflict prevention are constant monitoring
- The possibilities of back and face-to-face collision ends
Big change for Mumbai local
Western Railway currently operates more than 1,400 suburban services daily, in which more than 3 million people travel. According to officials, the deployment of armor will be a major change in this huge system with 110 EMUs (electric multiple units). Currently, work towards starting the armor on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad route is in the final stage, whose complete deployment is possible by the end of the financial year.
The expansion of armor will be completed by 2026
Western Railway said that they have prepared a plan to put a armor on 2,358 routes kilometers. According to a senior official, “The work of equipping all the suburban local and mainline engines with armor has started. This will prove to be a big jump in Onboard security.”
The arrival of armor is a historic step for Western Railway to ensure passengers’ safety, reduction in human errors and operational efficiency on high-density routes like Mumbai. With the fully implemented of this indigenous technology in local trains by 2026, India’s suburban rail system can be one of the world’s safest systems.
