Raj Bhawan Renamed: The Central Government has directed to change the names of Raj Bhawans of all the states and union territories of the country. Now Raj Bhavan will be known as ‘Lok Bhawan’. The word Lok Bhawan will be used instead of Raj Bhawan on all government documents. This change comes after the Home Ministry’s instructions to rename Raj Bhavans across the country as Lok Bhavan and Raj Bhavan as Lok Bhavan. This is part of an initiative to remove colonial-era titles across the country.

In which states names were changed

Raj Bhavan, spread over 62 acres in Ranchi, the capital of Jharkhand, was officially named Lok Bhavan on Wednesday. Along with this, the names of Raj Bhavans of Maharashtra, Telangana, Chhattisgarh and Mizoram have been changed on Tuesday. Earlier, the name of Raj Bhavan has also been changed to Lok Bhavan in Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Assam, West Bengal, Uttarakhand, Odisha, Gujarat and Tripura. In other states the name is yet to be changed formally.

PMO’s name was also changed

Along with changing the names of all the Raj Bhavans across the country, the name of the Prime Minister’s Office has also been changed. The Prime Minister’s Office will now be known as “Seva Teerth”. The Prime Minister’s Office said that major changes have been made in all the public institutions of India. The purpose of this change is to promote the idea of governance and increase the responsibility of service and authority. According to PMO, this change will not only be administrative but also ethical and cultural.

Why are names being changed?

The offices of the Governor and Lieutenant Governor will now be known as “Lok Bhawan” and “Lok Niwas”. Changing the name of Raj Bhavan to “Lok Bhavan” is part of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s efforts to free India from its roots of slavery. Earlier, the name of Rajpath was changed to Duty Path. Kerala Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar and Secretary to Uttarakhand Governor Ravinath Raman have appreciated this initiative of the Government of India.
