CM Fadnavis: Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has announced a big plan to provide relief from the increasing jam and congestion in Mumbai. The government is building a huge underground network of tunnels in the city, which Fadnavis named ‘Paatal Lok’. This network will work like a parallel road system, which will reduce traffic pressure on the roads and make transportation easier. According to Fadnavis, this project will bring a major change in the traffic structure of Mumbai and will give citizens a new option for fast, safe and hassle-free transportation. Fadnavis said at the Youth Connect session of IIMUN (India’s International Movement for the United Nations) that the planned tunnel grid will cover the city in multiple directions. He said that we are building ‘Paatal Lok’, an extensive network of tunnels to completely eliminate traffic jams and reduce congestion in Mumbai city. He said that it will serve as a new route for the existing main routes.

A network of parallel roads will be built

The Chief Minister said that this will be a parallel network to the existing roads. He said that the expansion of the metro corridor will complement this plan. The Chief Minister said the road from South Mumbai to Bhayandar (in Thane district) will serve as a jam-free parallel route to the Western Express Highway. He said that 60 percent of Mumbai runs on the Western Expressway. Unless you decongest it, there is no solution. He said that we are building a network of parallel roads, where the average speed of vehicles will be 80 km per hour. Fadnavis mentioned several tunnel projects under construction including Thane-Borivali and Mulund-Goregaon. He said that this will improve East-West connectivity. A parallel road between Borivali and Goregaon and the Worli-Shivadi connector, which is expected to be built next year, will provide seamless movement of people from Atal Setu to the Bandra-Worli Sea Link.

There will be no increase in second class fares

Fadnavis said that the tunnel connecting Atal Setu to Girgaon Chowpatty through Eastern Express Highway will be completed in three years. He said that this will provide relief from the existing traffic jam. The proposed tunnel from Bandra to Bandra Kurla Complex will make it easier for people to reach the domestic airport. He said that people will be able to reach the domestic airport from South Mumbai in 20 minutes. Fadnavis said that a unified Mumbai One app has been launched to provide a single ticket for Metro Rail, suburban local trains and BEST buses. He assured that about 90 lakh people travel by suburban trains every day. Said that despite so many changes, the second class fare will not be increased by even a single rupee. He said that all suburban services will gradually become air conditioned.
