Transport system: Modern technology will be used to provide smooth traffic and freedom from jams to the people in Jammu and Kashmir. The traffic police will use Intelligent Traffic Management System (ITMS) for traffic management. ITMS is a modern, automated system that monitors traffic through cameras and sensors. This challan helps in reducing congestion and identifying criminals. Expressing concern over the low utilization of ITMS, a senior official of Jammu and Kashmir government directed the traffic department to make effective use of the technology. Chief Secretary Atal Dullu said that the use of this technology was started to modernize and ease the traffic in Jammu and Srinagar. But the Chief Secretary expressed concern over its non-use. He stressed that proper use of these technical systems is important in increasing traffic control, monitoring and discipline, hence the department should take initiative for this.

Instructions for replacing faulty cameras and traffic lights

Chief Secretary Dullu said this while chairing a high-level meeting to review the implementation and status of electronic enforcement systems for road safety in Jammu. Said that the purpose of promoting electronic enforcement system is to streamline traffic management and ensure greater ease for the public. intelligent traffic management system (ITMS) Emphasizing the need for maximum utilization of ITLS, Dullu directed the traffic department to make effective use of ITMS and ITLS in Jammu and Srinagar. He expressed concern over the low utilization of these systems. Said that it is not fulfilling the purpose for which such advanced technology has been developed. The Chief Secretary called upon the concerned departments to immediately implement ITMS and ITLS and ensure full operation so that people can get uninterrupted and jam-free transportation. Keeping in mind the functioning of the cameras and traffic lights installed in both the cities, the Chief Secretary directed to repair and replace the faulty hardware so that the system can function properly continuously.

ITMS installed at major intersections

Regarding rural ITMS, Dullu asked to expand electronic traffic management to major intersections in districts like Anantnag, Baramulla, Kathua, Udhampur and Samba. He said that such systems can significantly improve the traffic system. A detailed project report (DPR) worth Rs 1.88 crore has been prepared for complete renovation and modernization of all existing ITLS junctions, Housing and Urban Development Commissioner Secretary Mandeep Kaur told the meeting. He said that the target is to make all ITLS and ITMS junctions fully functional by December. Regarding its current status, Inspector General of Traffic M Suleman Chaudhary said that ITMS in Jammu and Srinagar was commissioned in 2024, with 552 cameras installed at 44 junctions in Jammu and 828 cameras at 68 junctions in Srinagar. However, he said that services in Srinagar were affected due to the expiry of the system license. Out of 64 sites in Jammu, 21 ITLS were closed due to widening and expansion of roads. While five have been closed in Srinagar.
