The situation became so bad that Argentina’s World Cup-winning captain had to leave the field early. Taking suo motu cognizance of the chaos at the stadium, Bidhannagar police arrested Dutta from Kolkata airport on charges of mismanagement of the event. He had gone to the airport to see off Messi and his team on their way to Hyderabad. West Bengal DGP Rajiv Kumar said that we are investigating whether there was any mismanagement on the part of the organizers due to which chaos spread in the stadium. The police have now brought the situation under control. Police interrogated Satadru Dutta and his manager in a departure lounge at the airport.
The organizer will refund the ticket price
DGP Kumar said that the organizer has given in writing that it will refund the price of tickets sold to the disappointed spectators. Following Messi’s brief appearance, his first at the stadium since 2011, a grand football extravaganza was expected, but widespread violence and disorder broke out at the stadium. Due to which a large number of spectators became disappointed, because despite buying tickets by paying huge amounts from far and wide, they could not even see a glimpse of their superstar. Police said they are also investigating how the organizers allowed the sale of bottled water and beverages inside the stadium premises, when these are prohibited items during such events.
Action will be taken against the culprits: ADG
The DGP said that thousands of water bottles were thrown inside the pitch by angry spectators, using them as missiles. They also uprooted chairs from the gallery and used them as ammunition on the policemen and security personnel defending inside the grounds. Spectators alleged that water bottles were being sold at exorbitant prices inside the stadium despite police banning such items from outside at the entry gates. Police admitted that there was a tense atmosphere in the gallery due to Messi not displaying his football skills on the field. ADG (Law and Order) Javed Shamim said that we are investigating the matter. We will ensure that whoever is responsible for what happened today at the Salt Lake Stadium is punished. Said that action will be taken against the concerned officials.
