Punjab News: Before the Zilla Parishad and Panchayat Samiti elections in Punjab, the police arrested gangster-turned-politician Gurpreet Singh Sekhon. The arrest has increased political turmoil in the state. As soon as the news of the arrest was received, anger spread among the supporters. People blocked the Firozpur-Ludhiana road. Supporters raised slogans against the police and the common man government. Two members of Sekhon’s family are contesting as independent candidates from Firozshah and Bajidpur constituencies. Shiromani Akali Dal has given its support to these candidates. Sekhon was arrested late Thursday night. On Friday, many of his supporters protested outside the Kulgarhi police station. Firozpur-Ludhiana road blocked. The police and the common man raised slogans against the government and demanded his release.
AAP scared of public support: Sekhon
Deputy Superintendent of Police (Rural) Karan Sharma said that Sekhon was arrested along with his two other associates as a precautionary measure. The DSP said that on Friday he will be produced in the SDM court for further proceedings. A few hours before his arrest, Sekhon had uploaded a video on social media in which he had expressed apprehension of police action against him. In the video, he had said that the police is under pressure because the local leaders of the ruling Aam Aadmi government are scared of the huge support they are getting from the public. Shiromani Akali Dal District President Joginder Singh Jindu said that this is the height of anarchy because the Aam Aadmi government is destroying the democratic system in the state by practicing witchcraft. Jindu alleged that it has now become clear that the local AAP MLA has accepted his defeat, due to which he has taken this step out of frustration.
Will contest Punjab Assembly elections in 2027
Sekhon’s team member Arshdeep Singh said that we are getting tremendous support from the voters in this Zilla Parishad election, due to which the AAP leadership is now using police force to intimidate us. He further said that the Sekhon candidates will win this election because the public support is with them. Earlier, Sekhon has also announced to contest the 2027 Punjab Assembly elections. He had said that he has forgotten his past and is now ready to serve the people of his area. Sekhon was one of the accused in the sensational Nabha jail break case in 2016, when the SAD-BJP government was in power. Sekhon was released after 16 criminals along with five criminals and two terrorists attacked Nabha jail. Zilla Parishad and Panchayat Samiti elections in Punjab are to be held on 14 December. Counting of votes will be done three days after voting.
