Protesters gathering for the July Charter were demanding state recognition, legal protection and rehabilitation of those injured during the protests that toppled the Awami League government of then Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in August 2024. The news portal further wrote that the protesters allegedly entered the Parliament complex by climbing the main gate in the morning and then gathered in front of the stage. The police used mild force to remove them from the square. At the same time, the officers chased them out of the Parliament complex and lathicharged many protesters along with firing tear gas and sound grenades. The July Charter was drafted after lengthy negotiations between the commission constituted by the interim government and the political parties. The National Citizen Party (NCP), a key ally of Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus, has said it will not sign the document. Hasnat Abdullah, chief coordinator of the student-led organization formed in February with Yunus’s blessings, said in a social media post late Thursday night that the NCP will not sign the July charter. NCP convenor Nahid Islam had earlier said that some political parties (national) are signing this document in the name of consensus and are deceiving the people. According to the government, more than 80 recommendations for running the country have been included in the charter prepared by the National Consent Commission.
