Social Media Ban: Thousands of youth took to the road in Kathmandu on Monday against the comprehensive ban imposed on 26 social media platforms by the Nepal government. Thousands of protesters shouted slogans against the government. Thousands of protesters organized by Hami Nepal Group marched from Maiti Mandla in Kathmandu demanding freedom of expression and restoration of their digital rights. Students wearing school uniforms also attended the rally. The police fired water showers, tear gas and rubber bullets on the agitators, giving the violent form of the protesters. The protesters had reached the restricted areas near the Parliament House complex. Some even entered the campus. After this, the officials imposed curfew in Central Kathmandu till 10 pm, citing security.

Nepal government’s strict step for not registration

The Nepal government on Thursday banned social media sites like Facebook, Instagram and YouTube for not registering within the stipulated time limit with the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology. The Nepal government had given seven days time to social media companies from August 28, so that they can register themselves. Even when the deadline ended on Wednesday night, any major social media platforms Meta (Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp), Alphabet (YouTube), X (East Twitter), Redit and LinkedIn did not submit the application. Police said that violent protests under the leadership of the youth against the Nepal government’s ban on social media sites in Kathmandu on Monday intensified, in which at least 42 people were injured. After this, the authorities imposed a day’s curfew in some parts of the capital.

Curfew till 10 pm in Kathmandu

Local media said that 5 died in violence. However, there has been no official confirmation of this. Thousands of youth and students took to the streets from Monday morning. The agitators took out a march in Baneshwar and Maitiyar areas. The agitators alleged that the government is trying to suppress the freedom of corruption and expression on a large scale by banning 26 social media platforms including WhatsApp, Facebook and X. The protest became violent when the protesters broke the police barricades near Parliament House. Eyewitnesses said that security personnel used lathicharge, tear gas shells and rubber tablets to disperse the crowd. In view of the violent protest, the Kathmandu district administration has issued prohibitory orders in the vicinity of Parliament House from 12:30 pm to 10:00 pm. Chief District Officer Chitra Lal Rizal said that demonstrations, meetings, meetings or sit -in will not be allowed in restricted areas.
