Ruckus in Punjab over Centre's bill, BJP gave clarification

Chandigarh News: The Center has started preparations to bring Chandigarh under the constitutional ambit of the Governor. The government will bring the bill in the session starting from December and now the opposition parties have started protesting about it.

Chandigarh News : The Center is preparing to bring Chandigarh, the joint capital of Haryana and Punjab, under the constitutional ambit of the Governor. According to the bulletin of Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, the government will present the 131st Constitutional Amendment Bill-2025 in this matter on December 1. Meanwhile, BJP is facing criticism over the bill to appoint an independent administrator in Chandigarh. Meanwhile, Punjab BJP Chief Sunil Jakhar on Sunday said that Chandigarh is an essential part of Punjab and assured that the confusion regarding the Union Territory will be resolved. Also, Chandigarh is an essential part of Punjab and it stands strongly for the interests of the state.

The issue will be resolved through talks

Sunil Jakhar said that whatever confusion there is regarding Chandigarh will be resolved by talking to the government. Being a Punjabi, I want to assure you that Punjab comes first for us. The Central Government has proposed to bring the Union Territory of Chandigarh under the ambit of Article 240 of the Constitution, which gives the President the power to make regulations and make laws directly for the UT. If the bill coming on December 1 is passed in Parliament, then Chandigarh can have an independent administrator, like earlier there used to be an independent chief secretary.

Opposition parties protested against the Centre.

This amendment has heated up politics in Punjab, with the ruling AAP, Congress and Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) criticizing the central government. Also the Center has been accused of trying to snatch Chandigarh from Punjab. Presently the Governor of Punjab works as the Administrator of UT Chandigarh. Earlier, after the reorganization of Punjab on November 1, 1966, it was administered independently by a Chief Secretary. But from June 1, 1984, the administration of Chandigarh is with the Governor of Punjab and the post of Chief Secretary was made the advisor to the UT Administrator.
