What is crop insurance scheme?
Crop insurance is given to farmers to protect against economic losses from natural disasters, pests, diseases and other risks. It is a financial security shield that provides compensation to farmers in the event of loss of their crops, so that they can maintain their livelihood. In a country like India, where agriculture is mainly dependent on rainfall, drought, flood, hailstorm, storm or untimely rain can destroy crops. Under such circumstances, crop insurance helps farmers to overcome the economic crisis.
What is its purpose?
The purpose of crop insurance aims to help farmers in risk management, encourage investment in agriculture and stabilize their income. It gives farmers the confidence to invest in modern agricultural techniques and high quality seeds, as they are less worried about harm. In addition, crop insurance strengthens the rural economy, as it prevents farmers from getting caught in debt trap. Schemes like Pradhan Mantri Crop Insurance Scheme (PMFBY) in India provide extensive coverage at low premiums. This scheme covers the risks ranging from sowing of crops to harvesting. The insurance amount is determined on the basis of crop type, area and risk. This not only provides economic security to the farmers, but also makes them self -sufficient and strong.
