Sexual Harassment: Police on Wednesday arrested a professor in Bengaluru for sexually harassing a graduate student. The professor is accused of sexually assaulting a 19-year-old graduate student at his residence last month. Police said that a 45-year-old professor of a private university had called the graduate student at his residence last month. The student has alleged in her complaint that on September 25, the accused professor called her home on the pretext of lunch. Although she initially refused, he kept asking her to accompany him. The professor also spoke to my mother and assured her that his wife and children would be at home and she would be safe. The student alleged that earlier the professor had contacted her parents and talked about her poor attendance. After this, the accused professor assured her that he could help her in her college assignments and clear her doubts.

The complainant student alleged that the professor also convinced her to take a paying guest near his flat so that she could meet him whenever he called for college-related work. According to the complaint, trusting the assurances of the accused professor, his mother asked him to accompany the professor to his house. However, when they reached the professor’s house in his two-wheeler, the accused told that his wife and children were not at home and would return only next month. When she hesitated to proceed, the professor reassured her that she would be safe and that he wanted to talk to her about something important, which he could not do in the basement of the building. The victim student alleged that after taking her home, he sat next to her on the sofa and started asking her personal questions. He also convinced her to break up with her boyfriend.
Gave assurance of help in marks and attendance
The complainant student said that he also promised to help her in her marks and attendance. The student alleged that the professor touched her inappropriately and sexually harassed her, even though she had objected to his actions. Meanwhile, the student got a call from a friend. On this the student said that she had to leave immediately. However, the complainant student said that the accused professor warned her not to tell anyone about the incident and claimed that he was only testing her loyalty towards her boyfriend. Later, the student approached the authorities at Tilak Nagar police station and lodged a complaint against the accused professor. A senior police officer said that based on the complaint received, we registered a case under section 75 (sexual harassment) of the Indian Justice Code. The accused professor was arrested and later released on bail from the police station.
