Ropeway Service in Varanasi: Ropeway service in Varanasi will start by May 2026. With the commencement of this service, devotees will find it much easier to travel to Kashi Vishwanath Temple. The construction of ropeway is going on at a fast pace to take pilgrims from Varanasi Railway Station to Shri Kashi Vishwanath Temple. The ropeway will be fully in service by May 2026. A top government official said that around Rs 800 crore is being spent on this project. This service will be India’s first service to run within the city. Varanasi Commissioner S Rajalingam said that there is a plan to commission the ropeway by May 2026. Regarding the ropeway service, he said the decision was taken after several visits of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to modernize the infrastructure in the city.

Will reach the temple in just 15 minutes

Rajalingam told PTI that out of the total Rs 60,000 crore, Rs 40,000 crore is for the development of the city’s infrastructure. The reason behind the ropeway was that earlier 5,000 people used to visit Shri Kashi Vishwanath Temple every day, but today this number is around two lakhs. This ropeway facility is also a part of the modernization plan of the city. Commissioner Rajalingam is a resident of Kadayanallur in Tenkasi, Tamil Nadu. He took over as the Commissioner of Varanasi in April 2025. Due to narrow roads and dense area, the metro rail project was not feasible for the city. He said that hence it was decided to start ropeway service. He said that this will be the first ropeway service which will run within a radius of 4 kilometers within the city. The journey from the railway station to Shri Kashi Vishwanath Temple is expected to take approximately 15-20 minutes. He said that we are hoping to fix the ticket price at Rs 50 or Rs 100 per person.

Waterways will also be used for transportation

Said that each Gondola will be able to carry about 10 people. We are planning to put about 148 gondola into ropeway service. Said that it is expected that 1 lakh people will be able to travel in it every day. The Commissioner said that this year the district administration expects about 7 crore people to come to the city. Rajalingam said there are also plans to increase transportation using waterways. He said that we have started the dredging work. We have also built eight community ghats along the waterways. Rajalingam said that to strengthen the inland waterways, the administration has also increased the operation of boats on the Ganga river. He said that earlier 600 boats were operated, but today we are operating around 2,000 boats to serve the public. He said that the government is also keen to increase public transport and now electric buses are being operated on important routes.
