The National Education Policy is implemented throughout the country: UGC President

National Education Policy: Former UGC Chairman Professor Jagdish Kumar said that the National Education Policy should be implemented uniformly across the country.

National Education Policy: Former Chairman of the University Grants Commission (UGC) Professor Jagdish Kumar said in Kolkata on Friday that the National Education Policy (NEP) should ideally be implemented uniformly across the country. Speaking to reporters during the Vikas 2025 program at Visva-Bharati University, Kumar said that even if some states change its name to ‘State Education Policy’, the recommendations and features of the NEP should be implemented across the country. Kumar, considered one of the architects of NEP, said that this policy was made to ensure that the students of our country are educated and how they build their future. India is now a rapidly growing economy, which is creating new employment opportunities. Which means that the demand for skilled professionals is increasing. But many colleges and universities are not preparing students for this reality. How will they get jobs?

Future of students affected due to non adoption of NEP

Kumar said the NEP promotes multidisciplinary education, flexibility and opportunities for study of Indian languages, culture and indigenous knowledge systems. If a state refuses to adopt NEP, its students will lag behind the students of those states which are adopting it. They may also face difficulties in getting higher education in another state. Even if it is named as State Education Policy, it should be implemented because the name has no importance. Calling for strict action against unregulated private universities, he said with the advent of private universities across the country, an issue that has even attracted the attention of the Supreme Court, the UGC has started tightening the norms. Kumar said that we have made it mandatory for private universities to publicly disclose the number of applications received, admission rules, fee structure and sources of funding on their official portal. The public should have access to this information.

NEP will improve education

He further said that once the NEP is implemented across the country, there will be a significant improvement in academic standards in both public and private universities. Although many non-BJP states adopted features of the education policy after initial opposition, the NEP is still not fully implemented everywhere. The North-Eastern and Eastern Regional Conference of the ‘Development 2025’ program under the supervision of UGC was organized at the International Bangladesh Building of Visva-Bharati. Participants from universities and colleges from West Bengal, Bihar, Odisha, Jharkhand and all the eight north-eastern states of Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim and Tripura participated in the conference. Vice Chancellors, Registrars and Principals of universities and colleges of Andaman and Nicobar Islands also attended the conference. Five hundred participants from 377 universities and several colleges participated in the discussion.
