Delhi Liquor Sales During Diwali: Delhiites have celebrated Diwali by drinking alcohol. This Diwali, the people of Delhi have broken records and consumed alcohol. The Excise Department of Delhi Government informed that the government has made a profit of Rs 600 crore from the sale of liquor during Diwali. The Delhi government earned nearly Rs 600 crore excise revenue from the sale of liquor from retail outlets run by its corporations during Diwali, officials said on Thursday.

Last year’s record broken

A senior Delhi government official said that the Excise Department has recorded liquor sales worth Rs 594 crore from retail shops in the 15 days before Diwali. He said that the revenue received from the sale of liquor this year is 15 percent more than the same period last year. Liquor worth Rs 516 crore was sold before Diwali in 2024. “The sales of Rs 594 crore in the same period this year show a 15 per cent increase in the total sales volume of liquor,” he said.

Sales will increase further by the new year

Officials said that Delhi government has registered an increase of more than 12 percent in excise revenue collection in the first half of the current financial year as compared to the same period last year. According to official data, excise revenue including value added tax (VAT) stood at Rs 3,731.79 crore during April-September 2024-25. In the first half of the current financial year it increased to Rs 4,192.86 crore. Officials said the surge in sales during the Diwali festive season has raised hopes of surpassing the excise revenue target of Rs 6,000 crore in 2025-26 as another peak in sales is expected around New Year’s Eve.

Instructions issued to keep stock ready

Excise department officials said that the government has instructed the shops run by corporations to ensure timely orders and keep the stock ready for the festive season. There are more than 700 retail liquor shops in the city, which are operated by four corporations of the Delhi government. He said that in the Budget 2025-26, the target of excise revenue was set at Rs 7,000 crore, but later it was reduced to Rs 6,000 crore considering the sales projections.
