Nitin Gadkari: Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari told the Lok Sabha that the current system of toll collection in the country will be completely abolished in the next one year. In its place, a new advanced system of electronic toll collection will be implemented, due to which passengers will not have to stop at any toll plaza. Unhindered travel of people will be possible on national highways. Gadkari said during Question Hour that testing of this new system has been started at 10 places in the country and it will be implemented across the country in a phased manner in the coming months. He clarified that after the implementation of the new system, there will be no need to stop drivers in the name of toll.

Will save both time and fuel

The government believes that this will save both time and fuel. Apart from this, traffic management and revenue collection will be more effective. Transport and Highways Minister Gadkari also told the House that currently 4,500 highway projects worth Rs 10 lakh crore are underway across the country. According to an official statement released recently, National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has developed the National Electronic Toll Collection (NETC) system to streamline toll collection on India’s highways. Fastag is at the core of national electronic toll collection. Gadkari told the Lok Sabha in a written reply to a question that the government has decided to introduce new methods for toll collection with an aim to reduce congestion, eliminate delays at toll plazas and provide better experience to motorists on national highways.

Effort to simplify and modernize the toll system

Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari said that in an effort to enhance toll operations and enable seamless movement of vehicles, the government has decided to implement the multi-lane free flow electronic toll collection system, which will facilitate hassle-free tolling by automated number plate recognition with AI analytics and RFID based electronic toll collection (FASTag). Nitin Gadkari said that the government is trying to simplify and modernize the toll system. So that traffic on the highways becomes easier.
